The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a relentless, irritating drone. Sarah stared at her monitor, the spreadsheets blurring before her eyes. Another Monday. Her shoulders slumped. She’d been at the company for five years, diligently completing every task assigned. Yet, a shadow of discontent seemed to have settled over her.

A casual conversation at the water cooler – a blurted out admission of a starting salary from the new intern, Mark, had knocked the wind out of her. It was more than she made. Her stomach twisted, a cold knot forming in the pit of it.

She’d spent the weekend fretting, replaying the information. She sighed, her productivity plummeting. Coffee did little to alleviate the feeling of lead in her limbs. She just wanted the day to be over.
