Rain lashed against the window of the small, cramped cubicle. Michael rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. He’d come into the office early, hoping to get a head start, but his focus evaporated with the news.

He caught a glimpse of his reflection in the darkened screen – his face was drawn, his usual easy smile missing. The announcement of the salary of the young graduate, Chloe, had stung. A promotion he had been expecting now seemed a distant dream.

The air felt thick, heavy. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture somehow inadequate. He felt a weight on his chest, a sense of being anchored to the spot.
