The noise of the street was too loud, the sunlight too bright. Daniel’s limbs felt weighted. His motivation had slipped away.

He was checking his emails when he saw a promotional offer from a nearby deli: "The Parisian's Croissant." His, right down to the special butter and the folding technique he'd painstakingly learned in France.

He leaned back in his chair, a sense of flat, dull resignation settling over him. All the ambition he had once held, seemed to vanish.

He deleted the email, the action a small, insignificant act in the face of something larger.
