The letter lay on the table, unopened, for days. Finally, she picked it up, her fingers trembling. The message was stark, cold: demolition. She felt a bone-deep exhaustion settle in her.

She spent the day in bed, pulling the covers over her head, wishing she could disappear, too. The world outside seemed cruel, indifferent to her pain. She couldn't bring herself to eat, to shower, to do anything.

As night fell, she switched on the television but couldn’t focus on the images. The weight of the world, and the weight of loss, was crushing her. She felt like a deflated balloon, all her energy gone.
