Gemotions

The invitation felt heavy in Maya's hand. Liam's party. Laser tag. All the other kids from school would be there. She sighed, her shoulders slumping. Her own birthday was on the same day. Just a small get-together at home, a barbecue. It seemed pale in comparison.

Her stomach felt tight, a knot of unease. She dragged her feet as she walked into her kitchen, barely managing to muster a weak "Hi, Mom" before slouching onto a stool. The world felt muted, lacking vibrancy.

She pushed at a stray strand of hair, wishing she could just curl up in bed and forget it all. The thought of assembling the decorations that afternoon made her feel as though she were wading through glue.
