"Are you sure?" Sarah asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her hand traced the worn surface of the photo, a faded image of her and Ben, both grinning goofily. Ben had looked at the photo, looked at her, and offered a polite, somewhat detached smile. He’d claimed he was drawing a blank. He didn’t seem to recognize the freckled girl with the bright ribbons. The silence that had followed stretched out, thick and suffocating. The air in her small apartment seemed thin, lacking oxygen. Now, the weight of the moment pressed down on her, stealing the joy from the memories. She felt as though she’d been plunged into an endless, echoing cavern.
