The sunlight felt heavy on Elias's skin. He sat on the park bench, the familiar swing set a ghostly reminder of laughter shared with Chloe. He’d spotted her at the farmer's market, her curly hair bouncing as she chatted with a vendor. He, too, had been excited when he had approached her. She'd looked up, her eyes widening slightly, but then they clouded over with polite uncertainty. A slight shake of her head. No recollection. His carefully crafted re-telling of their shared adventures had seemed to bounce off a wall of oblivion. Now, the scent of fresh strawberries and blooming lilacs was lost on him. He felt as though someone had removed the very core of him, leaving him hollow.
