The vibrant colors of the art gallery blurred before Oliver's eyes. He stood across from the woman that he had called his best friend as a boy, a woman who simply went by her real name - Anna. He had thought that they would at least acknowledge the past, but her reaction felt cold and brittle, like shattered glass. She'd given him a half-hearted, apologetic smile, as she’d admitted that she didn't recognize him. He felt an emptiness spreading through him, a hollowness that seemed to echo in the cavernous space. The carefully curated art seemed to mock him with its vibrant, untarnished existence. He felt himself shrinking, becoming invisible in the crowd.
