She was stripping away all the raw vulnerability of her lyrics. The jaunty guitar riff, once a source of pride, now sounded cheap and tawdry.

Maya’s mouth twisted into a grimace. The song felt alien, like a piece of herself had been dissected and put back together wrong. She picked at the foam on her latte, each slow action requiring a monumental effort. She wanted to vanish, to crawl into a hole and sleep for a week.
