"Well," Emily said to the empty room, her voice flat, devoid of energy. The air in her tiny apartment felt thick, stagnant. She hadn't bothered to open the windows this morning. The letter lay open on her desk, the words a constant reminder of failure. She considered tearing it into tiny pieces.

She picked up her phone, intending to call her best friend, but instead scrolled through social media, seeing other writers. She immediately closed the screen.

The blank pages of her notebook seemed to mock her. The creative spark, which always burned so brightly, had dwindled to embers. Everything felt like too much effort. It seemed too hard.
