He stared at the ceiling, the familiar patterns failing to soothe him. The rejection email, safely in the trash, still haunted him. He found himself unable to move from the bed. He felt the covers holding him down.

The thought of facing the day, of resuming his routine, was utterly unappealing. The prospect of further writing felt like an insurmountable climb. He had put so much of himself into this book, a part of his soul.

He felt the sting of tears, unwanted and unexpected. The quiet of his apartment amplified his sense of isolation. His world felt significantly smaller.
