The vibrant colors of the office, usually a source of inspiration, seemed to have dulled. Alex stared blankly at his monitor, the bright screensaver failing to capture his attention. His throat felt tight, and his breaths came in short, shallow gasps.

The email had popped up in his inbox like a malevolent specter. He’d read the words, the familiar corporate doublespeak, and felt his spirit deflate. He didn’t want to read it, but knew he had to. He’d forced his way through it. He knew the implications of a takeover.

He rubbed his temples, trying to ward off the headache that threatened to consume him. He’d built a life here, found friends, and had started to feel a sense of belonging. The thought of losing it all made his stomach churn.
