The air conditioning blasted cold air, but it did nothing to alleviate the internal chill that had settled within Susan. She hunched over her desk, trying to shield herself from the fluorescent glare. Her mind was a scrambled mess.

The news had hit her like a blow. The vague, impersonal announcement confirmed her fears. The company was being sold. She didn't want to think about the details of the transition, the future. She could barely manage to drag herself out of bed this morning.

She felt a strange disconnect from her surroundings, as if she were a ghost observing the remnants of her life. She looked around at her colleagues. All their futures seemed uncertain. She wondered if they felt the same way, or if she was alone.
