The notice slipped from her fingers as she tried to fold it. It fluttered to the floor, landing face-up, its stark black letters a stark contrast to the faded floral pattern of the linoleum. She remained standing, her shoulders slumped, the weight of the world suddenly centered in her chest. The late afternoon sun, usually a welcome companion, seemed to cast long, mocking shadows across the cramped apartment. A sigh, heavy as lead, escaped her lips.

Her gaze drifted to the overflowing sink, a testament to her lack of energy. Even the thought of reaching for a sponge felt like scaling a mountain.
