The office air felt stale, the fluorescent lights harsh and unforgiving. Ethan slumped in his chair, the weight of the day – or, rather, the weight of the impending separation from his friend, Ben – pressing down on him. The mundane tasks of the day seemed impossible.

He kept glancing at his watch, not in anticipation, but in dread of the minutes ticking away. Each one brought him closer to the day Ben departed. He found it difficult to focus on anything.

He picked at the corner of a sticky note, shredding it into tiny, meaningless pieces. The energy he once had now felt like a distant memory, replaced by a slow, creeping fatigue.
