Gemotions

The morning sun cast long shadows across Amelia's cluttered apartment, but the light did little to lift her spirits. She shuffled to the kitchen, the floorboards groaning under her feet like an old man with every step. A half-eaten bowl of cereal sat congealing on the counter from yesterday. Another day, another struggle to muster even a semblance of enthusiasm. The unopened mail piled up near the door, a silent testament to her lack of energy. This morning, however, amongst the bills and junk mail, was a thick, cream-colored envelope, addressed in a familiar, yet unfamiliar, hand. A name from the past.

She sat heavily at the kitchen table, the envelope trembling slightly in her grasp. Her fingers traced the elegant script before she opened it. The paper inside was crisp, smelling faintly of lavender. The letter began with a hesitant, "Dearest Amelia..." The words blurred before her eyes, a heavy weight settling in her chest.
