Gemotions

The coffee tasted like ash in his mouth. He stared out the window, the rain blurring the cityscape into a wash of gray. He'd been moving through life lately as though underwater, everything muffled and distant. He barely had the energy to do anything besides sit. The mail, as usual, had been piling up on the table, a collection of unwanted obligations. Yet, today, among the clutter, was a single, hand-addressed envelope.

His fingers hesitated as he picked it up, the paper cool against his skin. The return address was unfamiliar, but the handwriting was instantly recognizable. He unfolded the letter, the paper crackling like a fragile promise. It detailed an apology, a belated attempt to mend a fracture in time. The words hung in the air, heavy and unmoving, reflecting his inner state.
