The bright, optimistic tone of the real estate listing grated on his nerves. He felt a profound depletion of energy, as if someone had drained the life out of him. He ran a hand over his face, his skin cool and clammy.

He recalled the scent of his grandfather’s pipe tobacco, the sound of his grandmother’s laughter, the feeling of safety and security that had vanished with time. The thought of those memories felt like a burden. The joy had eroded.

He closed the browser, then opened it again. He couldn't seem to tear himself away. The house's image continued to stare back at him, the cheerful facade mocking his interior state.
