He felt a deep, abiding sluggishness, a heavy cloak draped over his shoulders. The bright, cheerful images of the house, newly painted and renovated, clashed with the memories that churned within him. The memories were a crushing weight.

He remembered the arguments, the silence, the unspoken resentments that had filled the house. He remembered the feeling of being trapped, the yearning to escape. The past was anything but cheery.

He closed his eyes, then opened them again, the screen still there. A dull, aching sensation settled in his chest, a feeling he couldn’t quite identify. It had something to do with regret.
