The perky language of the listing, "Move-in Ready!" and "Great Location!" felt hollow and meaningless. He felt like he was slogging through quicksand. He felt drained, everything requiring excessive effort. Even breathing seemed strenuous.

He remembered the cramped rooms, the lack of privacy, the constant tension that permeated the atmosphere. He remembered feeling like a stranger in his own home. He felt a sense of defeat, of being unable to move on.

He reached out and closed the laptop with a weary sigh. He stood up, but felt little inclination to do anything at all. The weight of his past held him in place.
