"Dad?" Zara asked, her voice barely audible. Her father sat at the kitchen table, a crumpled letter in his hands. It was the letter. It confirmed it. His gaze was distant, his eyes cast down. Her father had another daughter.

She didn't know how to feel. She felt like she'd been plunged into an icy bath. The warmth of the room felt cold. The sounds of the world felt muffled.

Zara went and sat down in the chair next to her father. She felt the sudden and intense need to not be alone, the energy slowly draining from her body. The silence hung between them, thick and oppressive.
