Rain lashed against the window as Liam sat at the kitchen table, the inherited house feeling vast and echoing. He stared at the battered bucket list, its edges frayed. His father, a man of routine and comfort, had kept his desires a closely guarded secret. "Ride a motorcycle across Route 66." "See the Northern Lights." "Write a novel." The words swam before Liam’s weary eyes.

He picked up a lukewarm mug of coffee, its warmth doing nothing to thaw the chill inside. He hadn’t touched his own manuscript in weeks. He hadn’t felt any inclination to do anything, really. The emptiness inside was a vast, silent ocean, and he was adrift, utterly lost to the tides. His father's aspirations now felt like a taunt, a reminder of the vibrant life that lay just beyond his reach.

The kettle whistled behind him, a shrill, unwelcome sound. Liam ignored it, the list now a weight in his hands, a heavy reminder of what his father had never had a chance to achieve. He thought about the motorcycle, and the endless road, and a single tear traced a path down his cheek.
