Gemotions

The world seemed to be moving in slow motion for David. The sound of the morning traffic grated on his nerves. He felt a deep ache within him, a kind of general despair that colored everything. Even the smell of bacon, usually a comfort, made him feel sick.

He saw the postman delivering a package to Mr. Abernathy’s house. Mr. Abernathy was always friendly, always smiling, always impeccably dressed. David felt a flicker of envy.

Then he saw a helicopter landing in Mr. Abernathy’s backyard. He blinked, thinking he must be imagining things. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

Later that day, Mr. Abernathy’s gardener smiled cheerfully as he worked, and David felt a fresh wave of misery wash over him.
