Mark dragged himself through the door, the grocery bags feeling heavier than usual. He kicked them aside without bothering to unpack them, heading straight for the bedroom. His shoulders were slumped, his gait slow. He found Emily at her desk, engrossed in something. When he caught sight of the open laptop, a sense of dread washed over him.

The title of the document, "Beneath the Surface," was enough to send a shiver down his spine. The protagonist, "Marcus," bore a striking resemblance to him. As he scanned the pages, his breath caught in his throat. Emily had captured his flaws, his weaknesses, his self-doubt with brutal clarity. He was portrayed as a man burdened by secrets, consumed by internal struggles he thought he hid well. A wave of nausea threatened to overwhelm him.
