He was mid-sentence when his assistant handed him the book. He'd been explaining a complicated project, gesturing enthusiastically. The book, thrust into his hands, felt heavy. He stopped. His fingers ran over the glossy cover. He stared. His face lost all color. The project he was speaking about was forgotten. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound emerged. He blinked, slowly, then more rapidly, as though trying to clear his vision. His shoulders slumped. He felt an intense fatigue wash over him.
