He’d known, of course. The rumors, the whispers in the hallways. But hearing the official announcement still managed to knock the wind out of him. "We've hired someone to take over your responsibilities, and we'd like you to train him."

His pulse hammered in his ears. He looked around the room, at the familiar objects that had filled his life for the past decade, and felt a sudden, profound sense of detachment. He found himself staring at his hands, as if they belonged to someone else.

He tried to speak, but the words caught in his throat. He managed a weak nod. He felt a deep, overwhelming sense of being adrift, of losing his footing. He didn't know where to start, or how to end.
