The news arrived in a fleeting email, a casual phrase embedded in an otherwise mundane message. "Please familiarize yourself with the onboarding procedures for your replacement." It was a cold splash of reality. He didn't know what to do. He stared at the screen, heart racing.

He walked over to the break room and stared out of the window. The world seemed to be moving on without him. The sunlight felt hot, then cold, on his skin. He found himself unable to focus on anything.

He returned to his office, his steps slow and heavy. Every task, every responsibility, now felt like a burden. He glanced at the calendar. The days ahead stretched out before him, filled with a task he was entirely unprepared for.
