The old photo album lay open on the table. As he stared at the picture of the school play, it triggered a reaction of conflicting memories. Mary, in front of him, was reliving the event. She was reminiscing about their roles, the applause, and the excitement. She was so sure that it was all brilliant.

He, however, could only recall the stage fright, the missed cues, and the humiliation. He felt a deep sense of shame and inadequacy.

His throat constricted, and he felt his face flush. He swallowed hard, struggling to find his voice.

“I…I remember it very differently,” he croaked out, his voice a strained whisper.
