The scent of damp earth and old furniture hung heavy in the air. The bear, placed haphazardly amidst a collection of used tools and dusty trinkets, seemed to radiate a silent, familiar energy. John’s mind went blank.

He felt a deep and inexplicable pressure in his chest, making it hard to breathe. The yard sale owner, a young man with a pierced eyebrow, was busy helping another customer.

John stood there, frozen, his gaze locked on the bear. The distant sounds of conversation, the buzzing of a fly, faded into a background hum. He took a hesitant step forward, then another. He knew exactly what he had to do.
