Her eyes narrowed, then widened. The bear was there, looking just as it had the day it disappeared. Margaret felt a strange sense of unreality wash over her. It was like some bizarre trick of the light.

She didn’t move. Her feet were stuck in place. She felt as though she were watching a scene unfold in slow motion.

“Five bucks!” The man doing the selling seemed to be expecting some kind of response. Margaret tried to speak, but her vocal cords seemed to have seized up.

She pointed to the bear, her finger trembling. The man nodded. She paid.
