He stared at the birthday card clutched in his hand, a dull ache starting behind his eyes. It was a cartoon of a grinning cat wearing a party hat. Inside, a handwritten message, brief and impersonal: "Happy Birthday!" He knew he hadn't told anyone it was today.

He replayed the morning in his head, a desperate attempt to find a missing piece. The mail carrier, the neighborhood kids playing in the street, his own reflection in the window - all seemed ordinary, yet now, tainted with the unsettling mystery of the unsigned card. His jaw clenched.

He sank down onto the porch steps, the cold seeping through his jeans. He felt a sudden, inexplicable chill. This wasn't a practical joke, he felt certain. It had a different weight to it. A disquieting stillness settled over him.
