“And then he said, ‘I’m not sure what you're talking about, sweetie!'" Sarah narrated, mimicking David’s supposed words. It had been an awful story. Now, though, the story was irrelevant. Seated across from Sarah, at the small patio table, was another woman, named Alice, who looked just as perplexed as she felt. The two had been talking for over an hour, discussing their respective dating experiences with the same man.

Sarah's palms were slick. She felt like someone had just delivered her a life-altering gut punch. The air seemed to have thickened. It was hard to breathe. Alice was going on about his supposed passion for French films, a passion she had believed was shared only between her and David. The cafe lights suddenly seemed blindingly bright.
