He'd planned a romantic getaway, a weekend in a cozy cabin in the woods. He had booked it months ago, and now, here he was, staring through the cabin window at a woman disembarking from a car, holding hands with the person he planned to spend the weekend with.

His entire frame went rigid, as if he'd been encased in concrete. The world around him faded into a muted hum. He was aware of the throbbing in his temples, the pounding of his heart, the taste of dust in his mouth.

They were laughing, the two of them, carefree and unaware. He stood motionless, a silent observer of a scene that had completely shattered his understanding of reality. He could not make himself move.
