The dog park was usually a source of joy. Today, however, it was a battleground. He saw the familiar figure of his "girlfriend" and a dog that looked awfully familiar too. The new woman smiled, but a moment later, she turned and greeted another person: his girlfriend’s supposed best friend.

He felt the ground fall away. His legs turned to jelly. His vision tunneled. The dog was wearing a leash that bore his initials. He was frozen. He wanted to shout, but his vocal cords seemed to have seized up.

His breath hitched in his throat. He just stood there, his jaw slack, as the pieces of his world reassembled themselves in a horrifying new configuration. He was adrift.
