The weight of the jersey in his hands was crushing. Alex blinked, trying to clear his vision. The sunlight streaming in through the window seemed too bright, too harsh. Coach Peterson’s voice droned on, outlining the reasons, but they were lost in a swirling vortex of disbelief. The cheers of the crowd, the smell of the grass, the taste of victory – all of it, suddenly, seemed like a dream he was waking from. He felt the blood draining from his face, leaving him cold and numb. He wanted to say something, anything, but his tongue felt thick and heavy, unable to form the words.
