He’d always felt a certain ownership of his little corner of the office. John, poring over the fine print of the legal document in his hand, felt a peculiar disconnect. The words swam before his eyes. *Assets… liabilities… transfer…*

He blinked hard. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to pulsate, as though mimicking the frantic rhythm of his heart. He felt a tingling sensation in his fingers, as if they were suddenly too small for the world.

He felt a strong urge to escape, to run, but his feet were planted firmly on the floor. He swallowed hard, trying to moisten his suddenly dry throat. His fingers tightened on the document, crushing the corner of the page.
