The news hit Brenda like a physical blow. She was in the middle of a conference call with a client, but the words now blurred into meaningless background noise. She felt a sudden need to be somewhere else, anywhere else.

Her gaze drifted to the view from her office window, a panoramic vista of the city. The city, usually a source of inspiration, now felt distant, almost foreign. Her hand trembled as she muted her microphone.

She took a deep breath, trying to regain control. But the information had shattered something inside her. The phone slipped from her hand, landing with a soft thud on the desk.
