"So, yeah," said the email. "New owners. Things are… changing." David's coffee cup slipped from his grasp, the contents spilling onto his desk blotch.

He stared at the growing stain, a kaleidoscope of dark and light brown, as if the reality of the situation had been reduced to an abstract, unyielding form. He felt detached, as if he were observing a stranger’s reaction. The blood in his veins seemed to thicken.

His ears rang. He felt the need to get out, to run, to flee. He reached for the coffee cup, then paused. The world had shifted.
