He’d been enjoying his morning coffee, the newspaper spread before him. The crash was like a bomb. David sprinted out, his mug abandoned on the kitchen table. He stared. Across the fence, the giant maple lay sprawled, a chaotic tangle of branches and leaves. His mouth opened, closed, then opened again, but no sound emerged. His hands went up, then fell limp at his sides. The only thing he could think was that he should probably call the insurance. He remained perfectly still, the warmth leaving his exposed skin despite the sun.
