She was there, sitting in a large armchair, her face composed. “So, John, what can I do for you today?” she asked, her voice calm and measured. He felt a cold wave wash over him. His carefully crafted self-control crumbled. He simply stood there, speechless, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly.
