He hadn't felt this disoriented since he’d gotten lost in the woods as a child. The world swam. His heart hammered in his chest. Across the room, the same girl who had delighted in tormenting him sat in a comfortable chair. He was scheduled to have a therapy session and now this.

He saw the diploma. Dr. Patricia Hayes, PhD, LPC. He swallowed hard. The past, so easily forgotten, now roared back with full force. He found himself seated in the patient chair.

“So, David,” she said, her voice gentle, “what brings you in?” He could barely breathe. The air in the room seemed to have been sucked away. He couldn't form a coherent thought, let alone articulate his problems. He felt utterly and completely at her mercy.
