He’d found the ledger tucked inside a hollowed-out book on their bookshelf. He felt the pages in his hand, a dull sense of detachment washing over him. The book was one of his wife's favorites, a well-worn copy of *Pride and Prejudice*. He’d always admired her for her intellect, and now… he just felt incredibly, ridiculously… nothing.

He sank down onto the sofa, the book falling open on his lap, the ledger's contents a silent accusation. He stared at the ceiling, his mind utterly blank. His brain seemed to have short-circuited.
