The community garden was quiet. Emily was carefully tending her vegetables when she saw Mr. Davies, the quiet, solitary man who always wore the same faded blue shirt, driving up in a gleaming, brand-new sports car. She recognized the make as the most expensive car on the market.

Her hand froze mid-weed. Her mouth went dry. She’d always assumed he was… well, not doing so well. She'd occasionally offered him some of her surplus vegetables, thinking she was helping.

Now, a strange mix of embarrassment and disbelief washed over her. She watched him get out of the car, his face impassive. She wanted to disappear. She bent down and pretended to focus intently on her tomato plants.
