"Excuse me," Alex stammered, his voice barely a whisper. The professor’s words, a critique of his work, seemed to wash over him, leaving him feeling hollow. He stared at the marked-up paper, the low grade burning a hole in his chest. His hands were shaking uncontrollably.

He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to flee. He wanted to disappear, to vanish from the room, from the situation. His breathing became shallow and rapid. He felt a strange disconnect, as though he were watching a movie about his life. The world around him seemed to fade into a blur.
