The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that did little to ease the rising panic within Clara. She was staring at the man in the wheelchair across from her, a man who, minutes ago, had been a total stranger. The doctor had just finished explaining the genetic disorder, the same one both of them had.

Her mind raced, replaying her entire life, her constant battles against fatigue, her hidden pain. It was all real, and now, he was sitting right there. She felt a wave of nausea, her stomach turning. She blinked hard, trying to keep the tears at bay.

She found herself clutching at the arms of her chair.
