The phone call had been short, clipped. “The building… condo… you need to know…” The voice on the other end, his landlord’s, had sounded distant, detached. He hung up the phone, the dial tone ringing in his ears.

He stood in the middle of his living room, the phone still clutched in his hand. He looked around his apartment, the worn furniture, the faded artwork, the accumulated detritus of years. It was all a mirage.

His apartment seemed to shrink with every passing second. The walls seemed to close in on him. He felt as if he could barely breathe.
