The weight of the swim goggles felt heavy on Daniel’s forehead as he stretched. He'd woken up early, his mind already racing with the prospect of the tryouts. He imagined himself swimming effortlessly through the water, the competition trailing behind. His muscles buzzed with readiness. He felt he was ready to compete at the highest level.

Coach Peterson called out the names. The other swimmers around him began to cheer, and Daniel held his breath. His name wasn’t called. A cold wave crashed over him, leaving him breathless and disoriented. He stood, numb, watching the successful athletes embrace. The water began to seem less inviting.
