The telephone receiver felt warm in Sarah’s hand. Her grandmother’s voice, frail but firm, crackled in her ear. She tapped her foot impatiently. The silver locket, a family treasure, rested on the kitchen table, reflecting the cheerful yellow light. Her hands were clammy.

"Yes, Grandma, I understand," she replied, trying to sound calm, but a thrill coursed through her. She had been waiting for this moment, not quite patiently, but with a deep-seated want. The thought of wearing the locket, of carrying a piece of her family history so close, made her skin tingle.

"And you’re certain?" she asked, her voice a little higher than usual. The answer, when it came, felt like a green light.
