Sarah bounced on the balls of her feet, her smile a wide, genuine arc. She’d been preparing for this moment for weeks, scribbling notes on napkins, practicing in the mirror, and even trying out different inflections on her cat. Now, as the orchestra struck up a cheerful tune, she felt a flush of warmth spread through her chest. This was it. The culmination of all her planning: her father's retirement. It was going to be perfect. The microphone practically vibrated in her hand.

Her heart hammered a lively rhythm against her ribs as she walked towards the podium. She couldn't stop the grin splitting her face. The bright lights of the ballroom seemed to spotlight her, and the crowd of well-wishers blurred into a mass of friendly faces.
