The email shimmered on Maya’s laptop screen: Subject: Unofficial Family Matter. Her breath hitched. She clicked, fingers trembling slightly. The message from a lawyer in a city she’d only visited once, months ago, outlined the basic details: a DNA test, a shared parent, a half-sibling. A sister. She practically vibrated.

Maya immediately started researching. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn – she devoured every piece of information. Photos of camping trips, graduation ceremonies, and a dog named Gus filled her monitor. She knew she had to find this woman, to meet her. A nervous flutter took hold in her stomach. She booked a flight for the next morning.

Her suitcase felt weightless as she packed. She tossed in a new scarf, a small journal, and a book she'd never read. She felt as though she could barely contain herself. She imagined their first meeting, the words, the laughter, the years of missed birthdays. The anticipation was almost painful.
